Japanese Paintings and Works of Art 2008
Thomsen, Erik
8.25 x 11", 111 pp., fully illustrated in color with multiple views of items, signatures and seals, inscriptions, notes, bibliography, paper, New York, 2008.

This Erik Thomsen catalogue features selections from five specialities within Japanese art: screens, paintings, bamboo baskets, ceramics and lacquers. All items presented here were made, not with export in mind, but rather for the domestic market and in accordance with Japanese taste and aesthetics. Most of the objects are connected with one or more of the four classical arts: the ways of tea, flowers, calligraphy, and incense (Sado, Kado, Shodo and Kodo).

An exceptional screen "Autumn Bamboo" by Kamewari Takashi is detailed. In addition, the 17th century Inuoumono Dog Chasing Screen, which may be the missing left-hand screen that complements the right-hand one of the Ashmolean Museum's Inuoumono screen, is a major discovery within the world of early Edo genre paintings.

Other fine works include two portraits of the Zen Buddhist patriarch Daruma by the great Zenga masters, baskets made by Rokansai and his son Shokansai, a 13th century sutra repository jar, and fine lacquer boxes.
