Daigoji temple has played a prominent role on the historic stage as a leading institution in the Shingon tradition of esoteric Buddhism since its inception in 874 (Jogan 16).
Much of the history of Daigoji temple can be gleaned from the vast collection of documents and scared texts that have been preserve within the temple archive.
This exbition catalogue traces the history and art of Daigoji temple from the Heian period through early-modern times in part through masterpieces of Buddhist sculpture.

192 masterpieces are illustrated and are categorized into sections: 1. the Beginnings of Daigoji Temple-Shobo, the Great Master Rigen, 2. the Appearance of an Esoteric Buddhist Temple, 3. Esoteric Buddhist Prayers- Rituals and Sacred Images of Principal Worship Objects, 4. the World of Iconographic Drawings, 5. Inherited Teachings, Transmission of the Sanbo-in Lineage, 6. Daigoji Temple and Shugendo, 7. History of the Temple’s Flourishing, Hideyoshi and the Cherry Blossom Viewing at Daigo.
