After ten years of extensive research, Kathryn Selig Brown curated this landmark exhibition of approximately 50 objects that date from the 2nd century BCE through the 20th century. They originated in Tibet, India, Pakistan, Burma, Thailand, China, and Japan. Loans from private collections, as well as museums in the United States and Europe, provided the most comprehensive display of Tibetan thangkas (sacred paintings) bearing handprints and footprints ever assembled. They are reproduced in color in this important catalogue, the first to treat the subject. In addition to Selig Brown''s lucid and scholarly essay, Donald S. Lopez has written an informative article on Buddhist symbolism.
