The North Tower (also known as Northern Pagoda) can be found in Chaoyang, Liaoning province, China, and is the last standing of three ancient Buddhist towers once situated in this area. In 1986, when archaeologists and scientists were renovating the infrastructure of the tower, they excavated the base and discovered the Helong Palace of Three Yan, established during the Eastern Jin dynasty (317-420 CE).

The North Tower and its base were used for over 800 years and the excavations of ancient relics turned up items from the Eastern Jin, Sui, Tang and Liao dynasties. This volume reports the complete findings of the archaeological teams, including their methodology as well as the intricate steps taken to maintain the building’s structure. With detailed text, comprehensive line drawings and an entire section of color images of stone carvings, sculpture, calligraphic rubbings and more, this report is paramount to the further study of one of Chaoyang’s most important historical sites.
