The mounting of Chinese painting or calligraphy is a unique craft with a history of over a thousand years. Known by a variety of terms in Chinese, the mounting includes the backing of the artwork itself and often incorporates silk borders and various other elements and accessories.
This bilingual volume features 45 examples of mounting in high-quality color plates, including hanging scroll mountings, handscroll mountings, album leaf mountings, fan mountings, packagings for paintings and calligraphy, and the remounting and restoration of ancient paintings. Each example is accompanied by 1-2 paragraphs of description and analysis. Also included is a chapter entitled "The Mounting Formats, Conservation, and Remounting of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy," and an appendix explaining the tools and materials used in the art of mounting.
