Opium was as important to world trade and politics as petrol is today. The Opium Wars forced China to give trading rights to Western companies, allowing opium to become the basis for international trade with China. At first, it seemed benign, and during the 19th century, European writers even praised the "midnight fairy." By the time the dangers became apparent, it was too late. Escape from the "real world" and physical addiction came together, and are still with us to this day.
