China and India, though not distant from each other, are nevertheless separated by the Himalayas. Renowned Chinese monks such as Faxian, Xuanzang and Yijing overcame tremendous difficulties, travelling through the maritime and terrestrial Silk Roads to visit sacred Buddhist sites and study Buddhist scriptures in India. Thus, the large amount of Buddhist scriptures and sculptures had a profound influence on Buddhist theories and arts in China.
This exhibition, the firs exhibition held by the Palace Museum under the independent curator system, showcases 56 pieces of sculpture from major museums in India along the footprints of those Chinese Buddhist masters as they went on their pilgrimages in India. It enhances the cultural and artistic communication between the two countries and manages to provide the audience with a grand feast of China-India cultural exchange.
