Shigasan Chogosonshiji Temple is said to have been built by Shotoku Taishi on ground that is sacred to Bishamontenno. Myoren Shonin, a saintly monk, later revived the temple, developing it into an important worship center for ascetic mountain practices in the province of Yamato. successive emperors and powerful warriors placed special faith in the temple and made repeated pilgrimages. The National Treasure Illustrated Scrolls of the Legends of Shigisan, which was created in the context of such profound faith, is counted as one of the three greatest illustrated scrolls in Japan and is also recognized as a masterpiece of Heian-period painting.
This special exhibition is the first attempt in history to display every scene in all three scrolls of the Illustrated Scrolls of the Legends of Shigiasn throughout the duration of an exhibition. As they additionally exhibit treasures from Chogosonshiji temple, the significance of the scrolls as records of the temple's legends will also be placed in the context of the long history of faith in Shigisan.
