“Suzhou fakes” are fake but fine works of painting and calligraphy from the former Qing palace collection produced in the 16th to 18th century and related to Suzhou styles. The exhibition catalogue uses fineries of forgery to discuss identification of 49 important works, their background formation, and later influence. Even if the works in the exhibition cannot be determined as actually being made in the Suzhou area, they nonetheless specifically boast that taste of Suzhou and the testimony of Suzhou literati. These works mostly reflect the styles of famous Suzhou painters or are accompanies by collectors’ seals and inscriptions in the name of Suzhou elite to take advantage of the Suzhou label.
