By comparing Edo and Beijing in the 18th century, this exhibition catalogue aims to introduce people the life in a city with a history that differs from their own, stimulating a sensitive understanding and empathy with another city’s historical culture.
116 exhibits including paintings, folklore materials and craft works are illustrated, including numerous valuable cultural properties from Capital Museum Beijing and Palace Museum. These pieces are divided into three chapters: The Fortifications and Government of Edo and Beijing, Urban Life in Edo and Beijing, and Art Culture in Qing Dynasty Beijing, illustrating and comparing the lives of the inhabitants and the cultures of these two cities.
