New Documents of Indian Painting - A Reappraisal

Wales Museum, 1969. Item #45463

"The present volume which is a re-consideration of Indian miniature painting up to the sixteenth century is no more than an attempt to elucidate the many problems which face those who have endeavoured to study this period. The available evidence is all too often inadequate for firm conclusions and we are conscious of this limitation. Nevertheless, having regard to the new material which has come to light in recent years, we felt that the subject merited an effort on our prts to indicate certain trends and lines of development which we think the evidence indicates." (preface) Chapters address a general history; Illustrated Persian and Laur-Chanda Manuscripts in the Late Fifteenth Century; Indian Painting in the First Half of the Sixteenth Century ; Illustrated Avadhi Manuscripts; and The Last Phase. Includes a bibliography and supplemental illustrations. One of 500 copies.
