This book is devoted to the Thousand Buddhas as central to Buddhist art. Based on the Khotanese scroll discovered by Sir Aurel Stein from the Dunhuang cave, it records the names of the Thousand Buddhas in Sanskrit, Tibetan, Manchu, Mongolian and Chinese, in original scripts from a pentaglot xylograph, and illustrates the Tibetan drawings of the the Thousand Buddhas obtained from Tibet. It details the Thousand Buddhas in literature, in grottos, in imperial ceremonies, and discusses the variations in different traditions.
