Kaiho Yusho is renowned as one of the most eminent painters of the Momoyama period, alongside such luminaries as Kano Eitoku and Hasegawa Tohaku. Almost all the paintings by Yusho that have survived into the present are those produced in the latter part of the artist's life, after the age of sixty, when he was working independently of the Kano school. Even later in life, the power of his brush did not fade in the slightest. From vigorous and high-spirited monochrome ink paintings to evocative yamato-e on gold leaf, Yusho maintained a distinctive and inimitable style that was all his own.
This exhibition, however, presents not only masterworks from Yusho's mature period but also rare examples of his early work, together with documents and historical materials that testify to the artist's many and wide-ranging associations, painting a vivid picture of his 83-year life.
