This book is an exhibition catalogue compiled by the Palace Museum. The exhibition is divided into five parts to present the Qianlong emperor’s experience of appreciating art during his six southern inspection tours: Making Preparations to Travel, Art Appreciation in Qianlong’s Travels, The Places of Qianlong’s Southern Inspection Tours, Traveling Sources of Art, Fate in the Journey. Thus it provides a closer and deeper look at a particular aspect of the Qianlong emperor’s life.
This catalogue is exceptionally well printed, with 41 Chinese paintings illustrated in color plates, an essay in Chinese, maps of Qianlong’s first and forth Southern inspection tour, as well as a list of works that Qianlong brought with him during his journeys in the NPM collection.
