This catalogue describes bronzes dating from the Shang (c. 1700-c. 1050 BC), the Western Zhou (c. 1050-771 BC), the Eastern Zhou (770-221 BC), and the Han (206 BC-AD 220) periods. The majority of the bronzes are ritual vessels, but some weapons, ornamental fittings and mirrors are also included. Ancient China was the only society in which vessels of any size or degree of complexity were cast in bronze."
