Museum voor Volkenkunde, 1994. Item #45763
This book is the catalogue to an exhibition which appeared in 1994-95, presented by the Dutch Museum of Ethnology. It is a collection of photographs made of South and Southeast Asia in the 19th century. A fascinating history, the book documents the Asian world of a century ago, as well as revealing some of the colonialist attitudes to the native peoples (many of the photographs betray a certain "otherness" in the treatment of the subjects). With biographical notes on more than 450 photographers who worked in the region at that time, this is a thorough and intriguing history.
